ROYAL OPERA HOUSE SCREENING: THE SLEEPING BEAUTY 28 APRIL 19:00
The Sleeping Beauty, the classic ballet with music composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreography by Marius Petipa, is coming to Zorlu PSM on April 28th , with a screening of the Royal Opera House performance!
With a text by Ivan Vsevolozhsky based on Charles Perrault's La Belle au bois dormant, the ballet carries the classic tale to the stage and has become one of the foremost ballets of classical repertoire since it premiered in St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theater on January 15, 1890. The choreography of Marius Petipa, who was also the ballet master of the Imperial Ballet, clearly outlined the conflict of good (the Lilac Fairy) and evil (Carabosse) with leitmotifs representing both of them. By 1903, the Sleeping Beauty had become the second most famous ballet in the Imperial Ballet's repertory with over 200 performances in 10 years.
The Royal Opera House of The Sleeping Beauty has been performed for 70 years, honoring Petipa's classic ballet and Tchaikovsky's glorious music. Being the ballet which reopened the venue in 1946 after World War II, The Sleeping Beauty holds a special place in the repertory of The Royal Opera House. Monica Mason and Christopher Newton's regie bring Oliver Messel's original designs to the stage, with additional design by Peter Farmer. Choreographers Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon also keep the original choreography of Marius Petipa as they create additional sections for the Royal Opera House production, taking ballet to a new height of sophistication and intensity with Tchaikovsky's score.
Zorlu PSM will feature The Royal Opera House production of The Sleeping Beauty with a special screening on April 28th!
