With a career that spans 40 years, Micus was heavily influenced by his study of traditional instruments and musical techniques from Japan, India, South America and other countries around the world. Having visited Asia at age 16, he started to travel the world and has established his style derived from ancient techniques in India and Japan, which enabled him to play all the instruments in his albums. He has received critical acclaim with his musical competence, creating unusual combinations of sounds and the illusion of an ensemble using layers of a single instrument.
Having released a total of 23 albums throughout his career, Micus started to work under the ECM label with his album titled Ocean, which was released in 1986. In Bold as Light (2010), he used raj nplaim, a free-reed bamboo pipe from Laos, and the nakhon flute, which was made in Japan from bamboo. Panagia (2013), in which Micus worked with Greek historian and scholar Vassilis Chatzivassiliou, featured ancient Byzantine texts that were prayers to Holy Mary.
Constantly experimenting with instruments, Stephan Micus is able to create a sound close to electronic music, yet is an acoustic purist who combines different ways of expression through his music. He has also done various collaborative work with American experimental guitarist Steve Tibbetts and Australian singer/songwriter Lisa Gerrard, who is also known with the band Dead Can Dance.
Zorlu PSM Jazz Festival, which will take place between May 3rd and 12th, will host Stephen Micus, German classical and world musician/composer who is known with his unique experimental style!
